Night of Museums in Budapest tonight, 24/06/2011

One of the reasons why the Ministry for Culture initiated the "Night of the Museums" in 2003 was to counter an effect as much as possible. Since then, the event has grown into one of Hungary’s most significant summer programs.

The programs offered by the various museums may start and end at differing times; but there will definitely be programs at every location between 6.00 p.m. and 12.00 p.m. The detailed program of events can be found at the www.muzeumokejszakaja.hu website ( where you can find an English version as well!), and a free special edition of Pesti Est will also list events taking place in Budapest.

This night offers programs  for those who are interested even more beside the usual sightseeing tours in the hungarian "hungarities", for those for example who are  interested in the story of the famous hungarian "snaps", the Unicum, made by Zwack, tonight can visit the Zwack Unicum Heritage Visitors' Centre, or learn a bit about the hungarian history in the House of Terror or about the roman times in Hungary at Aquincum Museum, or even visit a noble mension, Museum Kiscell, where even the crypts will be opened for the night, but in the same time! you can enjoy in he courtyard icecream:) and hungarian cookies the whole night and also to learn about the hungarian fashion design. For special interested there are the Közlekedési Múzeum with its oldtimers or "newtimers", but not to forget about the amusement seekers this afternoon there is the chance also to ride on the old-timer Merry-go-round from 1906 or to check the wooden-framed roller coaster from 1922 in the Amusement Park of Budapest.

Among programs are such international diamonds as the "1Thousand in 1Night":  a single night under the aegis of the Middle East;  Persian and Turkish concerts, Turkish folk dance performance, films, and contemporary Iranian fashion in the museum of applied arts, in addition to the works of nearly a hundred designers at the Kreatimm art fair. History can be taken away by owning a piece of our Zsolnay-glazed building ceramics. A competition has been announced for designers to create jewellery using fragments from the famous Zsolnay ceramic decoration of the museum building. The award-winning pieces can be admired and purchased at the new Museum Shop.
Just to follow the diversity of cultures for one special night, Mexico comes to life in VAM Design Center. This year's and night's guest of honor is a country with an especially exotic and peculiar atmosphere. Visitors are welcome to participate at an evening of Mexican culture with performances, Frida Kahlo paintings, salsa dancing, video screenings, tacos, tequila, and exhibitions.
And meanwhile the 8th wonder of the world, the First Chinese Emperor's Terracotta Army can be also visited. Just to mention some random places.

In Budapest, a combined armband will allow entry to museums, which will cost HUF 1,400 for adults and HUF 600 for children. Entry is free for children under six.

The armband will allow access to all programmes offered by participating Budapest institutions, as well as entry to permanent and temporary exhibitions. In Budapest, the armband is valid between 6.00 p.m. and 3.00 a.m. on 24 June 2011.

Moreover, the armband also entitles its holder to use the five different Museum Buses circulating in Budapest, as well as the entire regular BKV public transportation network between 6.00 p.m. and 3.00 a.m.
Armbands can be purchased at the museums and locations participating in the event, as well as at the ticket booths of our partner, BKV (Public Transportation Company of Budapest).
Outside of Budapest, tickets can be purchased at the museum sites.

Chinese terracotta army

The exhibition, which also tells the story of how the artifacts were found 30 years ago, will be on display at the VAM Design Center (6th district, Király u.26.) until September 18, entrance fee from 1500,-/child, 2500,-/adults.

The original terracotta army was unearthed in 1974. Farmers digging a well in Xi'an, Shaanxi province found the mausoleum of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, who died in 210 BC. Figures of thousands of life-size warriors and horses were discovered inside the tomb.

The exhibition features 100 quality replicas of figures, weapons, jewelry and everyday objects. Sounds and lights are used to create a mood for the story of the emperor and his army. In a small cinema, visitors can watch a movie about the discovery of the treasure.
